Hi, my name is Michela. Both my brother and I had to do community projects during middle school for an organization that we belong to.  My brother and I both came to realize that there are tens of thousands of senior citizens that have very little interaction outside of the facilities where they live. And, more than that, they have even less contact with young people, unless they are fortunate enough to have grandkids to visit them, which many don’t.  

And then, the pandemic hit, and we saw that the problem was even worse. After seeing the widespread use of Zoom and other video platforms (and we had to use them for school, too), we came up with the idea to create a place where senior citizens could connect with high school students so everyone could learn from each other.  First, we talked to our friends to see if they would be interested and see if they would be wiling to participate.  Then we asked the director of several assisted living facilities what he thought. That informal survey told us that the idea could work far beyond the confines of our county in New Jersey. Our idea was that we would create “fun sessions” of an hour, and high school students (anywhere) would do something fun for senior citizens (anywhere) via Zoom, and then the seniors could share a little bit about their lives and their perspectives.  And by doing that, the young people might get some perspective on their own lives and how they might compare to someone’s life 50, 60, or 70 years ago.  Meanwhile the seniors would have the pleasure of interacting with today’s young people, learn something technological, hear a song or an instrument, or just have a lively discussion about a common interest (music, sports, culture, art, whatever!) 

We have not seen any place on the internet that provides a community connection between kids in school and senior citizens.  These two groups are completely segregated from each other, and yet they live in the same world, in the same country,  We hope that Seniors and Seniors can change all that and foster a connection across generations that can benefit everyone.
